The Driving Standards Agency recommends a minimum of 40 hours driving tuition and additional home practice. Central Driving School think it is impossible to tell anyone how many hours of driving tuition they will need because, not only do pupils vary enormously in the amount required, but how could we possibly know without seeing you drive!!

Once you have started your driving lessons, your driving instructor will be able to give you a better idea when they have had time to assess your driving aptitude and ability. The minimum amount of driving lessons is one hour per week (less than this would limit your progress and consequently be more costly). It is, however, true of all pupils that the more driving lessons you have per week, the less it will cost overall and the quicker you will pass your driving test. We are unable to advise you about your finances but we can certainly advise you about getting the balance right between your driving tuition and other weekly commitments.

Achieving the standard of driving required to pass the practical test is a demanding experience requiring a good level of concentration and commitment. We see it as our responsibility to fully advise you on all decisions concerning your tuition.

Intensive Driving Tuition

The facts

  • The Driving Standards Agency have an average waiting time for practical driving tests of 6 weeks.
  • No driving schools have a pre-booking system. It is always on a first come first served basis.
  • It is sometimes possible to get a cancellation, which can shorten the waiting times but, again it is on a first come first served basis. There are no guarantees.
  • The Driving Standards Agency rule is that you must have passed your theory test before you can apply for your practical test. Theory tests are generally readily available.

Follow the link to the http://www.dsa.gov.uk/ web site to check on waiting times in your area.

Options

Book a practical test and then an intensive driving course running up to that date. Some schools will offer this option but we won't. Experience shows that this is not the best option. We know that a pupil's rate of learning across the entire syllabus can be difficult to predict.

Some people find driving easy but not the manoeuvres or vice versa. This means that if you book a ten or twenty hour course, a week or two prior to your test and are unable to get ready in time, you will have wasted your driving test fee (£62 on weekdays, £75 on Saturdays) and the cost of the driving lessons including the test (normally two hours), total loss £104.

Alternatively, if your driving goes really well, you may not need the full course, which again is a waste of your money.

We would recommend that you ring us or request a call back, and we can devise a course tailored to suit your individual needs.
